Department of Postgraduate and Doctoral Education

The Department of Postgraduate and Doctoral Education of I.Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University as a separate structural unit was established by the Order of the Rector, dated September 1, 2018, by restructuring the sector of post-graduate, residency and master's degree studies of the Research Department.

Since the founding of the Ternopil State Medical Institute in 1957, much attention has been paid to training of research and academic staff in post-graduate and doctoral studies, master’s degree programs, as well as advanced training and professional skills development of doctors in clinical residency.

Thus, about eight hundred people have completed postgraduate studies; most of them continued their research and teaching work at the Alma Mater. The efficiency of postgraduate studies in all years was 100%.

The master’s degree program as a form of the postgraduate education of doctors and pharmacists was initiated at the university in 1993. Since then, about four hundred specialists have been trained in the program. More than 350 interns received a master’s degree in medicine, and 50 intern pharmacists received a master’s degree in pharmacy.

Clinical residency as an advanced training of the postgraduate education provides high quality training of specialists in 33 specialties. More than 400 doctors studied in the clinical residency, including about 150 international specialists.

In different times, Professor Yu.I. Bondarenko, Associate Professor І.І. Melnyk, Professor І.М. Klishch, Professor L.T. Vykliuk, Associate Professor O.L. Sydorenko, Associate Professor O.M. Sopel were responsible for training of research and teaching staff in postgraduate and doctoral studies, master’s degree programs, as well as doctors in clinical residencies.

Since its establishment, the Department of Postgraduate and Doctoral Education has been headed by Associate Professor N.Ya. Potikha. Today, 2 specialists work at the department: О.S. Kovalyk and T.O. Bisovska.

The main task of the Department of Postgraduate and Doctoral Education is control over and promotion of training of the university research and teaching staff.

Since September 2016, postgraduate students at the third (educational and research) level has been training at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University in accordance with the updated curricula following the new requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the new Procedure for training PhD and doctoral students in institutions of higher education (academic institutions). The Department of Postgraduate and Doctoral Education has been licensed for educational activities at the third (educational and research) level in the following specialties: 222 Medicine, 228 Paediatrics, 221 Dentistry, 226 Pharmacy, 223 Nursing in 22 Health Care, and 091 Biological Sciences in 09 Biology. By the decision of the Academic Board of the University (the Minutes No.1, dated January 30, 2018), the University provides a doctoral program in the specialties of 222 Medicine, 221 Dentistry in 22 Healthcare.
